A Better Way To Train – In More Ways Than One

March 9th, 2010 by fabula

In the ever-changing busy world of business, companies find that in keeping up with the times, first and foremost, they’ve got to keep their employees up to speed by training them in an effective, expeditious manner. But with meetings, other work-related and lifestyle tasks cramping schedules to the hilt, who’s got time to travel to classes that can sometimes take up to an entire week to complete?

Fortunately, our always-advancing technological world has afforded us with the opportunity to train at home or at the office, but most significantly, in a more leisurely way that eliminates the need to travel. It’s called E-learning and it has become one of the most popular methods for training in the business world.

In lieu of its convenience, business e-learning can drastically accelerate training. Because one of its highly-appealing aspects is that since it is utilized via the internet, one or more divisions – at one or more locations, locally and globally – can learn at the same time. A team in California can be trained along with a group in New York and another in China, simultaneously; that in itself is a very economical approach as it eradicates the need for instructor fees, including travel and multiple seminar expenses – the employer and employees save time and money. And personnel can train at home as well, in the comfort and privacy of their own surroundings. There are even products available that provide the ability to create customized training programs so companies can develop personalized courses based on their particular needs.

Business e-learning opportunities are widely available for large corporations, small business owners and individuals alike. Whether in a sales environment, brick and mortar business or just starting out as a home-based or new business, absolutely anyone can take advantage of furthering their education and/or training with the abundance of business e-learning products and services on the market. This approach inevitably provides an efficient, economical (and more comfortable) solution as compared to the hindrance of time-consuming, costly training the ‘old school’ way.

Pass MCSE Exams by Studying Hard

March 9th, 2010 by fabula

Anyone who succeeds in passing the Microsoft Certificate Systems Engineer (MCSE) Exams and becomes certified is regarded as a Microsoft specialist. Although you may have your certificate, you will still have to keep upgrading as long as you remain a MCSE.

The person who is taking the MCSE Exams has a total of seven exams to complete. Four of them are networking exams, one is in design, another in client operating systems, and there is one elective. Those who are taking MCSE 2000 exams have six total exams to pass, four in operating systems, one in design, plus two electives.

In order to assist the aspiring Microsoft Certificate Systems Engineer, Microsoft has set up programs with classes which are geared towards helping a candidate pass the MCSE Exams. There are training centers which provide books, simulated practice exams, software, and other helpful tools which enhance the chances of passing the exams.

Boot camps for MCSE certification can benefit those who are attempting to take the exams. It can be difficult for many people to pass the exams on their first try. The boot camps are designed to help alleviate that burden. The MCSE Exams are a way of testing the skills of the candidates. Therefore a complete and through understanding of the topics concerning MCSE is needed and can be attained these coaching classes.

There is a limited schedule for the MCSE certification boot camp. The candidate is separated from the normal lifestyle such as friends, family, and other such typical situations. Naturally, lodging, meals, and other accommodations are provided there.

One negative way of getting an MCSE Exam certificate is to cheat. Rather than studying hard and learning the information needed to succeed some people will cheat their way through the exams and become Microsoft Certified Systems Engineers. These MCSE braindumps may help the candidates pass the exams but they won’t give them the skill or knowledge needed to carry out the job tasks expected of them. The person who chooses the MCSE dump is unprepared for the job world and will probably never succeed. Embrace the learning experience and do it the right way.

E-Learning – 5 Tips For Facilitating E-Learning

March 7th, 2010 by fabula

Instructors starting in the arena of e-learning have many details to arrange for a successful online experience for both themselves and their online students. Below are five basic tips that can help the online experience start out on the right foot.

Provide Clear Instructions For E-Learners

Instructors in e-learning courses have to be more diligent in being clear in providing clear and concise instructions for online assignments and activities. Since there’s little chance for immediate feedback for questions because most activity in an online course is asynchronous, instructions must be very clear and complete. Ambiguity should be avoided at all costs. Instructions should be easy to locate in the e-learning course. A central, unambiguous place in the course should be set-up for students to find instructions.

Acknowledge that E-Learning Students Need Motivation

Not all students taking e-learning courses are truly motivated to take the course and invest themselves. Instructors must learn to make assignments relevant and provide real world examples that students can relate to easily. Instructors should attempt to view the course from the perspective of the student and create assignments with that perspective in mind.

Make Your Presence Felt in Your E-Learning Course

Instructors facilitating an e-learning course don’t have the benefit of body language and other non-verbal cues. Instructors can make up for this by providing prompt feedback and creating a consistent tone in written communications. Instructors who make their presence felt in an online course through frequent online posts and through email are employing a proactive tactics to let students they’re engaged and involved.

Be Role Model of E-Learning Techniques

Instructors leading an e-learning course should always be a role model for their students. Instructors should work diligently to be involved in online student discussions. Online instructors should find ways to add comments and guide students in their online communications. If an instructor asks the students to present online, they need to be willing to model those online presentation skills first. Also, instructors should be a positive influence in their course by maintaining a positive and constructive tone in their e-learning course.

Set-up the Ground Rules for E-Learning Course Feedback

Many e-learning students feel that since a course is online feedback should be nearly instantaneous when they have a problem. Instructors should communicate upfront their policy for responding to questions and let students know that they have a policy for responding promptly, but that most communication will be responded to within 24 to 28 hours.

There are many more details to attend to when delivering an e-learning course than the five included in this article. But providing clear instructions, motivating students, being present in your course, being a role model and setting quality rules for feedback can go long way to creating a successful and satisfying e-learning experience for everyone.

Cisco CCNA Home Lab Study – The DTE & DCE Cable

March 6th, 2010 by fabula

More Cisco CCNA, CCENT, and CCNP candidates than ever before are putting together their own home labs for their certification exam study, and that’s a great trend – there’s nothing like learning on the real thing!

Part of putting a home lab together is getting the right cables and understanding their usage. In this new Cisco home lab series, we’ll take a look at the different cable types and how each fits into your home lab. The first cable type we’ll look at is the multi-purpose DTE/DCE cable.

When I say “multi-purpose”, I mean that while the cable will always perform the same task, it can be used in several different points in your home lab network. If you’re going to have a frame relay switch – and you should get one if at all possible, since having your own frame relay cloud is a tremendous boost to your home lab studies and your exam score – you’re going to need a DTE/DCE cable.

You can also use a DTE/DCE cable to directly connect two Cisco router serial interfaces and configure HDLC (the default) or PPP encapsulation over that point-to-point link.

Most of today’s DTE/DCE cables have “DTE” clearly stamped on one end of the cable – actually, “DTE” is probably embedded into the connector itself. Naturally, the other end will have “DCE” clearly indicated. It’s the DCE end that will connect to your frame relay switch. If you’re going to use a direct connection to run PPP or HDLC, it almost doesn’t matter which end of the cable is connected to a given router.

Keyword: “almost”. You must use the clockrate command on the DCE end of the connection in order to bring the line protocol up.

If you’re not sure which end of your DTE/DCE cable is connected to a given serial interface, just use the show controller serial command to get that information. Most of the output of that command isn’t comprehensible, but what we need is right on top:

R3#show controller serial 1

HD unit 1, idb = 0×11B4DC, driver structure at 0×121868

buffer size 1524 HD unit 1, V.35 DCE cable

Naturally, if it’s the DTE end, you’ll see “DTE” there. And if you don’t have anything connected to that interface, you’ll see “no cable”.

Whether you have your own frame relay switch or not, you’ll want to pick up some DTE/DCE cables for direct connections between your Cisco home lab router’s serial interfaces. Just don’t forget to put the clockrate command on the DCE end of the cable! And if you’re not familiar with a frame relay switch, check this same website soon for a tutorial that will show you how to set one up.

Just about any Cisco router can serve as a home lab frame relay switch, and once you’ve got it configured, you’re in good shape – but it can be a little maddening to get it up and running in the first place. I’ll show you how to avoid that aggravation in the next installment of this Cisco home lab tutorial series!
